The dogs here don't ask for much...a warm bed, friends to rely on and a second chance. Become a friend and visit www.DogsRuleGear.com to participate in the "Pedigree" Buy a Bag program. For every bag you donate, Pedigree will match the donation. All our shelter dogs thank you for remembering them!

Donate a Bed

Our dogs love to sleep on Kuranda Dog beds, but we don't have enough for everyone. If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for another dog to sleep in comfort, please click here.

Please Adopt a Shelter Animal!

Angel has been at the shelter longer than any other cat, and King has been there longer than any other dog. Won't you come visit them and see if either would be a good fit for your home?

Hi, my name is Angel! I'm a beautiful spayed female muted calico kitty. I'm sassy and independent and I enjoy being pampered--the softer the bed, the better! I do not like dogs at all, and I'm not so sure about other cats. Ideally, I would enjoy being an only kitty, so I can get all the attention and treats! I'd make a nice companion, so take me home with you today! Because I have been at the shelter for so long, my adoption fee has been reduced! I'm currently in a foster home, so if you would like to meet me, please call the shelter--my foster mom would be happy to bring me in to say hi!

Hi, my name is King! I'm a big, handsome, neutered male Doberman Pinscher mix, about 1 or 2 years old. I'm friendly, affectionate and love to give hugs. I enjoy going for walks and car rides, and I love playing with other dogs. I'm such a sweetheart, so please adopt me today!

There are plenty of cats and dogs waiting at the shelter for you. All long-term (at the shelter more than 6 months) cats and dogs have been reduced. In addition, some cats and dogs have been sponsored. The shelter staff will let you know which animals have been discounted.

Please help the cats and dogs

If you are not able to adopt, there are many other ways to support the work of the Humane Society of Rome - become a member, sponsor an animal, make a donation, become a foster, volunteer your time, or donate an item from our wish list. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!

Our Adoption Process

We sincerely hope that we can be of service to you. Anyone interested in adopting a cat or dog must first fill out a screening application. Our application is designed to help us determine if the adoption is in yours and the animal’s best interest and to place our animals into permanent responsible homes. We want to assist you in finding the pet most compatible with your lifestyle. Because the animal’s welfare must be our foremost consideration, HSR reserves the right to deny any adoption. Staff will review your application to ensure that the animal is going to a good home and that it is also the "right" animal for you. We want each adoption to be a good match. If for whatever reason it doesn't work out, please bring the animals back to us.

The adoption donation is:
Cats (already altered) - $90.00
Includes FELV/FIV test, first shots, worming, and flea control treatment
Kittens (and cats not altered) - $125.00*
Includes FELV/FIV test (kitten must be 4 months old), first shots, boosters (if still in shelter after 21 days), worming, and flea control treatment
Dogs (already altered) - $120.00 (plus a NYS license fee of $12.50-17.50-20.50 depending upon the dog)
Includes Heartworm test, first shots, rabies shot, worming, and flea control treatment
Puppies (and dogs not altered) - $155.00* (plus a NYS license fee of $12.50-17.50-20.50 depending upon the dog)
Includes Heartworm test (puppies must be 6 months old), first shots, rabies shot, worming, and flea control treatment
*Cost includes $35 refundable deposit as per NYS Spay/Neuter Law.
In addition, you will be given a free training tips DVD, a $29 value endorsed by The Humane Society of the United States.

Senior/AARP Discounts:
Seniors (65+) and AARP members get a 20% discount on all animals adopted that are at least one (1) year or older.
Seniors (65+) and AARP members get a 50% discount on all animals adopted that are seven (7) years or older.

Other Discounts:
All long-term cats and dogs have been reduced. HSR staff will determine if you are eligible for any discount.

Once an application is approved, often the same day, animals can be adopted out and go home with their new family. If the animal is not spayed/neutered, we will set up a surgery date. After surgery, the NYS Spay/Neuter deposit will be refunded.
